The Ireland SIG met today at 1 in the Navajo Room. About 10 members attended.
A discussion of surnames mentioned several books. Two were by Brian Mitchell, A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland and A Guide to Irish Parish Registers. Our genealogy library has both of these, the former on the British Isles shelves and the latter in No Circulation. Questions about immigration records led us to John Philip Colletta’s They Came in Ships, available both in Research and in No Circulation.
Other topics included Irish settlements in the Midwest, migration there from Boston, the New York Emigrant Savings Bank, the Plantations of Ireland and the Scots-Irish. For online resources, we noted the Irish Family History Foundation and Family Search Beta.
Muriel D. brought a page from Griffith’s Valuation. This prompted mention of the Placenames Database of Ireland. Ken J. offered to give us a presentation on Griffith’s Valuation at our next meeting, which will be the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, November 30th.
