Minutes of the December 2013 General Meeting

President Darwin Thornton called the meeting to order at 1 PM.

Darwin welcomed approximately 75 members, including 3 new members, and 45 guests (not all attendees signed in).

During the “Finally I’ve Located…” segment, stories about a Civil War soldier ancestor’s death mention in Ulysses S. Grant’s memoir and Norwegian emigrant family birthdate secrets were shared.

ANNOUNCEMENTS – Details for the below events can be accessed from our club’s website.

  1. The next meeting of the Pima County GS is Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, featuring Barbara Salyer on “Civil Service Records.”
  2. Green Valley GS meets Thursday, Dec. 19th. Clarice Bird’s topic will be “Land Records.”
  3. SaddleBrooke Genealogy Club will meet Jan. 2, 2014.  Betty Cook will discuss “Vital Records.”
  4. The Langley Family History Center in Tucson will conduct their annual “Family History Fair” on Jan. 25, 2014 from 9AM – 1:30PM.

The minutes of the November 12th meeting were approved as posted on our website on November 13th.

The November 2013 Treasurer’s Report, posted Dec. 1st, will be filed for audit.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Membership – Russ Krecklow – we have 183 members.

Ancestral Search – Barb Krecklow – volunteer monitors are always welcome.  Contact Barb or see her Friday mornings at the Genealogy Room in the Welcome Center.  The Beginners’ Class, starting Jan. 3, 2014 in Room 1 at the Welcome Center, is full.  There is a waiting list.

Field Trips – Joan Eddy – see Joan regarding signup sheets:

-Pinal County Genealogists Workshop – Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 in Casa Grande, AZ. Registration is at 8 AM, first session at 9 AM.  The fee is $20. There are several topics to choose from, including “Beginning Genealogy Research.”

-Green Valley GS Annual Seminar – Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, 9 AM – 4 PM, at the Green Valley Presbyterian Church.  Marion Pierre-Louis will present several topics about New England genealogical research.

Hospitality – Shari Norris – Thanks to those who brought goodies for today.   Signup sheets are on the table for next year’s meetings.

Display Case – Sue Huffer – If members have a “skeleton in the closet” they are willing to share for the January exhibit (you can remain anonymous!), please contact Sue or drop off the information in her drawer in the Genealogy Room.

Genealogy Tree photos – Karen Jonaitis – The current exhibit is children’s photos. New pictures are always welcome – 4X6 preferred, copies, not originals, as they will not be returned.  March’s tree will feature Irish ancestors, so drop your photos with identifying information in Karen’s drawer in the Genealogy Room.

Program Committee – Karen Haider – Handouts on guest speaker James Tanner’s Google presentation will be available on the Genealogy Room door on Thursday.  White cards on the seats today are for members to write suggestions for programs, such as what you would like to learn more about.  All suggestions are welcome.  There are new books in the library, “Genealogy for Dummies” and one on researching with Google.

SIGS – Cleo Wolf:

-Legacy SIG – Barb Krecklow – will meet Wed. Dec. 18th from 1 – 3 PM.

-German SIG – Irma Franke can assist with German research issues from her home.

-DAR – meeting Wed. Dec. 18th at 1:30 PM.

-Irish SIG – There are no scheduled meetings; Frances Rubino is available for one-on-one help.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. The SCOV Club Fair is on Feb. 7, 2014.
  2. The Courtyard Sale is March 29, 2014.  Please save your 2nd hand items for this event.  A volunteer is still needed to provide garage space for a staging area a few days before the Sale.
  3. The Mentoring Program is established, with several people volunteering to mentor.  Things are slow in this holiday month, but it is expected to pick up next year.  Please contact Darwin if you wish to mentor or if you have a topic or issue you want to learn more about.

NO NEW BUSINESS.

Today’s speaker is James Tanner on “10 Little Known Resources on Google.”

The next general meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 1 PM.  Steve Packer is our featured speaker on the topic “Family Tree on FamilySearch.org.”
