President Darwin Thornton called the meeting to order at 1 PM on April 14th. He welcomed 45 members and 1 guest.

The minutes of the March 10, 2015 meeting were approved as posted on our website March 14th.

The March 2015 Treasurer’s Report, posted April 2nd, will be filed for audit.

ANNOUNCEMENTS – Details for the below events can be accessed from our club’s website.

1. Pima County GS meets Saturday, April 18th. The topic is adoption. One of the speakers is Jean Banowit on An Adoption Case Study.
2. Green Valley GS meets Thursday, April 16th. Suzanne Brayer’s presentation is Stories from Immigrants.
3. SaddleBrooke GC meets Thursday, May 7th, featuring Robert Wilbanks on the topic S. Military Records.
4. Local and National Conferences:
   1. Pima County GS, on Friday, April 17th, 1:30 – 3:30, is sponsoring an education conference on Tips & Tricks Using Google at Woods Memorial Library in Tucson. Contact Joan Eddy of our club’s Field Trips committee, who will coordinate rides for those interested in attending.
   2. The NGS (National Genealogical Society) annual conference is May 13-16 in St. Charles, Missouri.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Field Trips – Joan Eddy. See 4.A in Announcements, if interested in attending the Pima County GS April 17th conference.

Membership – Mary Barr announced our club has 169 members.

SIGS – Cleo Wolf

1. Legacy SIG meets Tuesday, May 5th, 1 – 3 PM in the Welcome Center, room 3, across from our club computer room.
2. There will be no DAR or FTM SIGS until the fall season.

Mentoring – Holly Gibson announced she will be monitoring in our computer room Thursday, April 16th from 9 AM to noon. She invites anyone to stop by who may need mentoring for a genealogy-related topic. Members wishing to volunteer as mentors in the program, please contact Holly.

Monitor Training – Joan Allen said that in March, 162 members used the computer/library room facilities, even though the rooms were monitored only 60% of the available time slots. Monitor coverage has increased a little this month. Volunteer monitors are always welcome.

Display Case – Sue Huffer said a new display will go up next week. For future displays, she and Helen Jennette would be happy to work with any member who would like to share a family story for the display case.

Hospitality – Judy Fairchild thanked those who brought today’s refreshments. There is one volunteer needed to bring snacks for the May meeting. She also has a sign-up sheet for refreshment volunteers for the first fall meeting in October.

Genealogy Room Photos – Karen Jonaitis is collecting military photos for a Memorial Day display in our computer room. She asks that members provide 4X6 copies of the photos, if possible. Be sure to include the names of the individuals, dates if known, location, other information of interest, and your name and contact information. The photos can be dropped off at Karen’s drawer in the computer room.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. The poster has been removed from the computer room wall due to the use of the SCOV logo without prior review and permission. A design committee is working on a new version which will go through a formal review process by the SCOV marketing committee.
2. Darwin called for but received no additional nominations for candidates for Officers for 2015-2016. He presented the current nominees: Patrick McCarthy for President; Karen Hasselbach for Vice-President; Mary Barr for Treasurer; Andrea Houston for Secretary; and Frances Rubino for Member-at-Large (all but Patrick McCarthy were present). By voice vote, members approved all candidates. Karen and Andrea are new to the board.
3. This fall marks the 25th anniversary of SCVGS. Frances Rubino is coordinating the celebration and asks for volunteers to help review binders containing SCVGS documents & papers for historic value. The celebration will likely take place at the November 2015 general meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:

Darwin said the club computer desktops have been upgraded with “Fences.” This feature groups similar topics on the desktop, thus easing navigation to specific websites and databases.

Karen Hasselbach urged members to make a habit of wearing their SCOV nametags to meetings.

Today’s speaker is Homer Thiel, Hidden Stories from the Pima County Coroner.

The speaker for the May 12th meeting is Charles Schults on the topic Military Records after 1900.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:25 PM.
