Internet Archive

That book I borrowed from the NGS Book Collection via interlibrary loan was published recently. What if you’re looking for something 150 years old? Are you out of luck?

Christine Takerian found a book published in 1865 from the comfort of her own home: “Names of persons who took the oath of allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania between the years 1777 and 1789, with a history of the “test laws” of Pennsylvania” by Thompson Wescott.  This book is available for reading in your web browser or for download in a variety of formats, from a website called the Internet Archive.

The Internet Archive is “a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, and more.” It’s especially likely to have digitized copies of older books that are no longer covered by copyright. One reviewer said Wescott’s book was “an excellent source to prove patronage in the revolutionary war, especially in achieving DAR …  membership.” Thanks to Christine for letting us know about it.
